* The bottom left are your save file slots, with the purple button taking you to the next page. On the right are details about the selected save file, with the date, player name, club, and number of endings obtained(?) in the top half. The bottom half are your stats. When loading or saving the game, the game puts the cursor on top of your most recent save file. I'd recommend using different names or keeping the files you're using far apart to reduce the chance of saving over the wrong file.
* From top to bottom, the first four tabs on the left change the keyboard to: hiragana, katakana, symbols (including English characters), and kanji. The fifth option is "Confirm".
Order the information is put in:
* If you're playing an older version of the game, that's it! Go deeper into this guide for in-game translation help. If you're playing Emotional, the game then asks if you want to use EVS. "Yes" is on the left, "No" is on the right. The button on the bottom right just explains what EVS is.
* The game asks you this in this order: your last name, your first name, then your nickname. If you're not sure which step you're on, the part of your name it's asking for is written at the end of the first line.
* If you're playing for the first time or you're using a new name, you'll probably want to select 4 - Create new. It will take you to the screen below. (If you don't have an internet connection, press option 2 instead and scroll down for info on that. If this isn't your first playthrough and you're reusing an old name, select option 3 and pick your saved EVS file.)
* You'll have to input your name phonetically using this hiragana keyboard. If you don't know how to read a hiragana chart, here's a quick translation of the above keyboard:
| A | I | U | E | O | Ka | Ki | Ku | Ke | Ko | Sa | Shi | Su | Se | So | ||
| Ta | Chi | Tsu | Te | To | Na | Ni | Nu | Ne | No | Ha | Hi | Fu | He | Ho | ||
| Ma | Mi | Mu | Me | Mo | Ya | Yu | Yo | Ra | Ri | Ru | Re | Ro | ||||
| Wa | n | a | i | u | e | o | tsu | ya | yu | yo | — | |||||
| Ga | Gi | Gu | Ge | Go | Za | Ji | Zu | Ze | Zo | Da | Di | Du | De | Do | ||
| Ba | Bi | Bu | Be | Bo | Pa | Pi | Pu | Pe | Po |
* Here are a few tips for getting the prounciation of your name to sound correct:
* Once you're done, hit confirm and you will then be taken to this screen:
* The number of options you have will depend on how many syllables your name has. Option 1 will be to pronounce the name as it's written. The rest of the options stress different syllables on the name. You can use the yellow button to the right of the waveform to hear a preview of Shiori saying it using that option. When you're satisfied, press the orange button on the far right for the option you like best and then press the leftmost option in the box that pops up. If you want to retype the name, press the button in the bottom left of the screen to go back to the keyboard.
* When you confirm the name, you'll be taken to a screen with five EVS save slots. Your last name, first name, and nickname all get a separate set of five save slots, so don't worry about saving them over each other. Once you've saved it, you'll be taken back to the earlier EVS menu with the five options to do the next part of your name.
* If you don't want to go through the trouble of making an EVS or you don't have an Internet connection, the game has a hefty selection of prerecorded names to choose from! Unfortunately if you're not using a Japanese name, you might have trouble finding something that sounds similar. You can use the buttons at the bottom of the screen to fetch names that start with a certain kana. It's identical to the first three rows of the hiragana chart I translated above (except Wa has been added to the block with YaYuYo) so you can use that to help you find something you like.
* If you're too impatient for this EVS stuff but are too stubborn to turn it off, just go to Google and type in the search bar "[name of your character] hiragana" and there should be websites that generate that for you that you can copy or search the list for.
* Once you've dealt with the EVS data for your nickname, you'll be given a summary of your names. Press the bottom leftmost option to finally start the game.
