9. VOICES / EVS

* Toggle voice acting and EVS for each character. The left button is for general voice acting. The right button is for EVS (AKA what makes the characters say the player's name). If the setting is ON, the button will be yellow. Other characters only show up here after you've met them. The last on the list is "Others", meaning any unnamed characters with voice roles.

START GAME

* "New" is replaced by "セーブ Save" if you are accessing this menu from in-game.

NAMING YOUR CHARACTER

* The orange button is the keyboard you currently have selected (default is the kanji keyboard). The order you put your information in is: Last name, First name, Nickname, Birthday, Blood type. You must hit the "Confirm" button on the bottom right when finished each part of your name.
* From now on, know that はい (hai) means "Yes" or "Confirm" and
いいえ (iie) means "No" in all of the upcoming menus.

EVS

* If you don't want to hear the characters say your player's name, hit no to get to the game. Otherwise, set up EVS by choosing yes here.
* If you input your name in kana then these spaces will be pre-filled. If your name was written with kanji or alphanumeric characters, you'll have a blank space. The order from top of bottom is Last name, First name, Nickname. If you don't know how kana or Japanese pronunciations work, click here for a translation of the keyboard and some tips.

* After you've hit OK in the bottom right on all your names, you will see the next screen:

"Do you want to save the EVS data you created?"
* Select a memory card slot and hit yes to save the EVS data to it. Note that you can only have EVS data for one set of names per memory card. So if you choose a different name on a future playthrough, you'll have to overwrite your old EVS information or use a separate memory card. This should go for emulators as well, as this game has no way of creating and reading multiple EVS saves on one memory card. You need 1381kb (about 1.4mb) of space to save EVS data.

PROLOGUE - THE STORY

* It's the protagonist's first day of high school. On their way to school, they recall a legend about the old road that once was the main road to school. There is a "Legendary Hill" where couples who confess their love there will be happy together forever. Wanting to pay the area a visit because they haven't traveled that way since they were a kid, the protagonist takes the old road and upon reading the Legendary Hill, sees a girl admist the cherry blossoms. (The girl you see will be one of the main six found in this game, though who it is is determined by the minutes of your PS2 clock when you confirmed your name.)

At school, the protagonist introduces themselves to their class and reminisces about the girl they saw at the hill, lamenting that they didn't catch her name. A redheaded girl in the class named Yukiko Makihara introduces herself to the protagonist, saying she and the protagonist went to the same elementary and junior high school and that the protagonist had saved her from boys who were bullying her. The protagonist only vaguely remembers her, but compliments her on her new look. Before leaving, Yukiko mentions she's thinking about becoming the manager of either Soccer, Baseball, or Track & Field club (which one is random) and asks if the protagonist wants to join the club with her.

* The protagonist will repeat the club she mentioned in a short line of text (pictured above). If you plan on joining her club, it's best to find out now which one it is.

* After Yukiko leaves, the info-hungry Takuo Yabe and the egotistical playboy Masaki Shiratori (in that order) will introduce themselves to you. They are two more of your classmates and they are crazy about girls and dating them. They are your rivals in the game and will be fighting for girls' time and affection alongside you. After they leave, your character will feel tired and head home for the day.

* Once outside the school, you bump into the girl you met on the Legendary Hill to discover she goes to your school as well! Recognizing her and feeling like it was "fate" that they met there, the protagonist introduces himself under the excuse they didn't get the chance to exchange names before. The girl will think you're a weirdo, but will introduce themselves anyways. (If the girl on the hill was Yukiko, this scene changes.) After you go your separate ways, the scene ends and you're taken to the school command screen below.

REOCCURING EVENTS

AFTER SCHOOL 1 - Choosing who to walk home with

* This menu changes based on how many girls you've met.
Top left (牧原さん) is Makihara Yukiko and the last option (待たない) is no one. Any other options are the other girls you've met.

* After picking a girl, your character will wait around to catch them as they go by. It's possible they never will however, and you'll end up going home alone anyways.

AFTER SCHOOL 2 - Asking to walk home with her

* In this event, the protagonist sees one of the girl's preparing to go home. Option 1 is to ask her if you can walk together, while option 2 is to go home alone. The name of the girl can be found directly above the end of the first option (in the image above it's 牧原さん - AKA Makihara-san). See the above event for the kanji of each girl's names.

DURING THE WALK HOME

  1. Ask her on a date
  2. Ask for her phone number
  3. Just go home

* If you already have the girl's phone number, you will only see options 1 and 3.

* Girls may refuse to give you their phone number, especially at low relationship levels. It's recommended you ignore that option unless you've gone on a few good dates with that girl. Once you've raised their friendship by a stage, it should be safe to ask them.

* Check the Date page for info on setting up dates. You'll know she accepts the date if the protagonist repeats the month and day you scheduled it for after she replies to you.

HOW TO READ NAMES

* This section is a cheat sheet for every character's name in menus and in conversation. Full names are found in your phonebook, while the first column is what is used when the protagonist is referring to them in dialogue or can be found in the walking home after school menus. Note that there are points where you have the option to change how you refer to certain characters, such as changing whether you use their first or last name or what honorific you use with them. If you end up using this feature, I'd recommend writing down what you change it to so you don't lose track of who is being mentioned in dialogue.

* In general, by default the protagonist refers to all the girls as
(Last Name)-san (さん)
and refers to the boys with just their last name and no honorific.
You may also see the honorific -chan (ちゃん) used to refer to girls, either when you modify your own appellations or when other characters are speaking about them.
