WHAT IS BUG QUEST?

BUG QUEST is a game I made in a gamemaker called Bitsy! It is about walking around and talking to bugs. Sometimes you help them with their problems! And other times you simply stare at them and their funny dialogue. It's a game I initially made in early 2018 then later thought I lost the files for... and then I found them again in 2024 and decided to bring the rest of my old ideas to life!!

The game is simple and fairly short (you can get an ending in 15-20 minutes if you're taking your time and you can get EVERY ending in less than an hour... probably) but it's a project I had a lot of fun with! So I hope you enjoy it! :)

Below you can find a walkthrough that details how to get all 15 endings! There are also solutions for various "puzzles" here.

There are no pictures of the endings themselves so they can still be a surprise, but there are a few "spoilers" regarding what the endings entail (and the map includes all secret locations) so please try to find them on your own first for the intended experience! :)

Tip: LIGHT ZONE MAZE SOLUTION

To solve this puzzle, you must follow the path that matches the shape of the worm's body. If you keep talking to the worm, he gradually tells you the solution step-by-step.

If you have the Ladybug's letter for the worm, you can bypass the maze completely.

Here's where to go on each screen:

1. Up
2. Up
3. Up-Right
4. Down-Right
5. Down
6. Down-Right
7. Up-Right
8. Up
9. Up
10. Up

Tip: SWAP DAYTIME/NIGHTTIME

When you first enter The Sewers via the Bee Dungeon, you can access the nighttime areas by heading into the northern white entryway and then step into the light to the right.

If you want to return to the daytime areas, you can re-enter the bee's hive and jump down the hole to be transported back to daytime.

This is not only helpful if you missed a dialogue trigger and don't want to restart the game, but is actually necessary for certain endings.

The following are guides on how to get the game's "main" endings:
Ending 1 & 2: Normal Ending

Travel from the Sunny Zone all the way to the end of the Light Zone! There are no other requirements.

There are two variants of this ending:

1. Step on this tile to get the NORMAL ENDING.

2. Step on this tile to get the ABNORMAL ENDING.

Note: v1.0 has a slightly different Normal Ending and has no variations on it. Try it out on itch.io if you want!

Ending 3: Spider Ending

Help the spiders in the Spider Zone with their fetch quests and meet the Spider Queen. Consult the image below for the order to talk to the spiders in.

Once you reach spider 12, talk to all the spiders again in reverse order (so go to spider 11, then spider 10, and so on).

Once you've returned to spider 1, go outside to the Rainy Zone and talk to the spider out there. Enter The Attic and follow the path to the ending.

WARNING: If you have the letter from the Bee Queen on hand, there is an unintended glitch where if you enter The Attic during the daytime, it is possible to lock yourself out of the Spider Ending. If you've started the mail quest and still want to get the Spider Ending, do not walk back towards the entrance while in The Attic.

Ending 4: Snail Ending

Talk to the snail in the Rainy Zone (daytime) 100 times to be invited to their party.

Progress through the game until you can access Rainy Zone Nighttime. Interact with the shell where the snail used to be to enter the party.

Talk to the DJ twice to trigger this ending.

Ending 5: Worm Ending

Collect nine worms and deliver them to the Worm House in the Light Zone. The Worm House is after the maze and then to the left.

Worm locations:

1. Sunny Zone Daytime
2. Cloudy Zone Daytime
3. Rainy Zone Daytime
4. Spider Zone Daytime
5. Danger Zone Daytime (the screen with the bee's hive)
6. Bee Dungeon
7. Sunny Zone Nighttime
8. The Sewers (once in the water walk to the far left)
9. City Zone (end of the road)

If you can't get enough of collecting worms, there's also a secret tenth worm to collect! Where could they be...?

Ending 6: Butterfly Ending

In Sunny Zone Night, you can walk under the tree and pass through the gap in the fence. Travel all the way around the fence and down to the Rainy Zone and speak to the butterfly. You will now have the ability to fly, which you can test by flying over the fence to the left of the butterfly.

You can use this ability to fly over various gaps that you may have encountered on your adventure.

Once you have this handy ability, you can access the Butterfly Ending. Go to The Sewers and walk under the pipe that leads to the City Zone to reach a dead end area. Use the Butterfly ability to enter the grate.

Travel all the way to the end of the pipe to get the ending.

The following are all "secret" endings. You can find in-game hints on how to get them by talking to the "KNOW-IT-ALL BUG".
Tip: FINDING THE KNOW-IT-ALL BUG

You can find this helpful bug exclusively in the nighttime Danger Zone. On the screen with the bee's hive, walk to the right where the ground juts out the most (there is a bug blocking the way here during the daytime) to reach a secret area.

This bug will tell you the names of all the secret endings, which main ending they are related to, and a hint on how to find them. See if you can find them with his hints before consulting the rest of the walkthrough!

Requires the Butterfly ability to access.

Ending 7: Secret Normal Ending

Ending 7 is the "Timeloop Ending".

In the final room for the Normal/Abnormal Ending, step past the fence to trigger the dialogue then go back the way you came from to get this ending instead.

Fun fact: you can get slightly different dialogue here if you accepted the bribes on the route to the Butterfly Ending. ...maybe.

Ending 8: Secret Spider Ending

Ending 8 is the "City Ending".

Complete the spider sidequest and talk to the spider in the Rainy Zone but DO NOT GO INTO THE ATTIC!!! Talk to that spider a few more times and they will let you leave.

WARNING: if you talk to this spider again you will be locked into the Spider Ending.

All of the spiders will now have new dialogue. Talk to them and a certain one will mention plans of going to The City.

Proceed through the game as normally until you reach the City Zone. On the screen with the worm, stand out on the edge of the road overlooking the city to trigger this event.

WARNING: If you leave the screen you will not be able to replay this event unless you restart the game.

Ending 9: Secret Snail Ending

Ending 9 is the "Party Gift Ending".

Fulfill the requirements for the Snail Ending. Before going to the party, go to the City Zone. Behind the pipe you exit from is a pitch black area. One of the tiles (marked on image) will take you to a secret room with an item you can pick up.

Bring this item to the party room and talk to the snail twice to trigger an event.

Ending 10: Secret Worm Ending

Ending 10 is the "Crime Ending".

IMPORTANT: Go through all of the Danger Zone bee's dialogue before triggering this event! If you don't, you will be locked out of this ending.

First, collect the worm from the Bee Dungeon. Do NOT pick up any worm EXCEPT the worm from the Bee Dungeon or else you cannot obtain this ending.

Make sure you talked to the Danger Zone Day bee already. Then during daytime Danger Zone, go behind the hive to find the Bee Treasure Room. Touch the ! to trigger an event. Here are the three bugs you must talk to:

1. Bee (Danger Zone Daytime)
2. Dung Beetle (Cloudy Zone Nighttime)
3. Grasshopper (City Zone)

Once all three bugs have agreed to help you, return to the Bee Treasure Room.

Ending 11-13: Secret Butterfly Ending

Endings 11, 12, and 13 are all variants of the "Hopper Ending".

Collect the three pieces of "moss" throughout the game then talk to Hopper Rider during nighttime Danger Zone. You can find them in the following locations:

1. Bee Dungeon - in the worm's cell
2. Sewers - same area where you access the Butterfly Ending
3. Rainy Zone Nighttime - use the Butterfly ability to fly to the dock

There are three variants of this ending.

11. Double Riders Ending: Befriend Hopper Rider by exlusively using DEFEND
12. Mosquito Ending: Defeat Hopper Rider by exclusively using ATTACK
13. Game Over Ending: Lose the fight against Hopper Rider by not achieving the conditions for one of the above endings

Tip: DEBUG MODE

Interact with the middle flower in Sunny Zone Daytime 10 times to activate debug mode. When this is turned on, you will have activated the variables for every ending (except the Mail & Lucky Endings) and thus can access them without doing the prerequisites.

What this means:

- Talk to the Rainy Zone spider to go to The Attic without doing the spider quest
- Get into the Snail Party without ever talking to the Snail
- Automatically obtain the required number of worms for the Worm Ending
- Butterfly ability unlocked
- Can do City Ending without talking to any spiders
- Automatically obtain the Party Gift
- Heist event activated & All accomplices collected
- All moss eaten

Endings this does not help towards:

- Does not affect your attack/defend counter
- No effect on Mail Ending progress
- Because this sets your counter at 10 worms, you will be locked out of the Lucky Ending if you collect any extra worms

(Note: This feature has not been fully tested so some things might break if you try to play the endings as intended while Debug Mode is active.)

The final two endings are "extra" endings that were added after the game was completed.
Ending 14: Mail Ending

Talk to the Snail in Danger Zone Daytime to activate the mail quest. Note: you can pick up letters before talking to the Mail Snail but you cannot deliver them until you do.

Here is a list of where to find every letter and who to deliver it to:

1. On the ground (Cloudy Zone Day) -> Pondskater (Rainy Zone Day)
2. Sassy-Standing Bug (Danger Zone Day) -> Stick Bug Prisoner (Bee Dungeon)
3. *Stick Bug Prisoner (Bee Dungeon) -> Onion Detective (Snail Party)
4. Flea (Rainy Zone Night) -> Congratulations Spider (Spider Zone Day)
5. Busy Mama Bug (City Zone) -> Scared Bug (Danger Zone Night)
6. Bee Queen (Bee Zone Night) -> Spider Queen (The Attic Day OR Night)
7. On the ground (Spider Zone Night) -> Sleeping Bee (Bee Zone Night)
8. On the ground (Danger Zone Night) -> Santa Mandibles (Winter Zone)
9. Igloo Worm (Winter Zone) -> UFO Bug (Cloudy Zone Night)
10. Big Antennae Bug (Sunny Zone Night) -> Boopi (City Zone)
11. *Boopi (City Zone) -> Mailbox (Cloudy Day Zone)
12. *Mailbox (Cloudy Day Zone) -> Big Antennae Bug (Sunny Zone Night)
13. Trash Bag (The Sewers) -> Ladybug (Sunny Zone Day)
14. *Ladybug (Sunny Zone Day) -> Wormpapa (Light Zone)

* = Must deliver the above letter to receive this one

You do NOT need to be invited to the Snail Party or to The Attic to achieve this ending. You DO need the Butterfly ability.

Once you've delivered all 14 letters, go to the post office in the Light Zone (go right on the screen with the red sprites) and talk to the Mail Snail for your ending.

Tip: FINDING THE SWAMP ZONE

The Swamp Zone is Bug World's most fabled myth! To reach it, you must first go to the Light Zone. Instead of solving the normal maze, take the center left path.

The riddle requires you to retrace your steps through Bug World as if you are walking back to the Sunny Zone screen by screen. The riddle requires you to "pass through" the City Zone, The Sewers, the Danger Zone, the Spider Zone, the Rainy Zone, the Cloudy Zone, and the Sunny Zone on your way to the Swamp Zone.

If you are trying to solve this on your own, you can interact with the map in the room to keep track of what step you are on and if you are progressing in the sequence correctly.

1. Left 14 (this represents the trek through the City Zone and the Sewers)
2. Up 3 (exiting the Sewers via the manhole into the Danger Zone)
3. Left 1 (reaching the screen in the Danger Zone with the Spider Zone entrance)
4. Up 1 (into the Spider Zone)
5. Right 2 (traversing the Spider Zone and exiting into the Rainy Zone)
6. Up 3 (from the Rainy Zone going north to the Cloudy Zone, then to the Sunny Zone, then beyond)

WARNING: You may or may not be able to leave the Swamp Zone. Watch out.

Ending 15: Lucky Ending

The beetle in the Swamp Zone wants to see a specific number of worms between 1 and 10.

This number is completely random and if you do not have that exact number, you have to restart the game to try again.

The tenth worm is found in the top right of the Swamp Zone.

While there is only one ending, there is slightly different dialogue for each winning worm amount. Do you have the patience (and the luck) to see them all?

While you try to get this ending, why don't you see what the other bugs in the Swamp Zone have to say? They all have different dialogue depending on various factors such as where you left off on the spider quest, the moss you've gathered, whether or not you're a butterfly or mailbug... and more!

Good luck! :)
