YU-GI-OH! GO RUSH!! - SOME THOUGHTS & LISTS![]() As some of you may know, I am a bit of a Yu-Gi-Oh fanatic. More specifically, I'm a fanatic of the anime. After ARC-V ended, while I enjoyed it so much that I intended to keep up with the series (vowing to watch VRAINS and even attempting to watch ZEXAL for the first time) I didn't touch the franchise again until 2023 when a friend of mine wanted to get into the series by starting at Season 0. Curious about what was going on in the current ongoing show, I dove into GO RUSH!! with absolutely no expectations. I didn't know a single person who had watched RUSH-era Yu-Gi-Oh and thus I had no idea what to expect. For about two years I've kept up with this show - and even ended up watching every other Yu-Gi-Oh while it was airing - and this weekend the show finally came to an end. ![]() In case youre not familiar with the show, I'll provide a quick rundown: this show is about a man named Yudias Velgear (pictured above), an alien soldier who has come to Earth in search of a way to end the war back in his home galaxy. He meets the 11-year-old twins Yuhi and Yuamu Ohdo, who run a local business that tackles extraterrestrial-related problems. Yudias is hired into their company and in exchange, the twins teach him about "Rush Duels", a card game that children play and for some reason is part of a prophecy that Yudias believes is the key to finding peace for his people. Over the course of the series, the gang meets many aliens and cryptids living in and around their hometown and manage to befriend them after helping them with their problems - sometimes involving tackling alien-human politics and spacetime travel. Like how SEVENS ended up being a parallel to the original Duel Monsters, this show is a parallel to GX. Building off of what came in the previous show, most of early GO RUSH!! is a slice-of-life romp through the fields as Yudias goes through his Rush Duel tutorial arc, meeting all sorts of wacky characters (most of whom share surnames and voice actors with characters from the previous show, building intrigue about how they are connected) along the way. And much like GX, he and his friends are put through The Horrors and end the series irreversibly changed. Season 3 of both GX and GO RUSH!! introduces Contact Fusion AND ALSO features a main character turning into main villains. Characters fuse their souls together. Amnesia is involved. The protagonist ends the show going through a depression arc - only getting a moment of peace in the final episode - upon realizing dueling isn't as fun as it used to be after using it to save the world one too many times. Even though classic Yu-Gi-Oh fans have seen these story beats before, GO RUSH!! still manages to keep them fresh and full of intrigue. By the way, this show is tailored towards 8-year-olds. It's like watching a baby sensory video but halfway through the protagonist has a breakdown trying to grapple with the extinction of his people. The final arc of the show is a one-two punch featuring both a heartbreaking "loss of innocence" arc as well as a reoccurring character who's a walking fart joke. It's tough out here being an almost-30 year old watching shows for babies. And still... I love this show so much. This show is about being forced to grow up due to trauma and other circumstances beyond your control. It's about losing yourself for the sake of a future you want to protect. It's about having the courage to break free from it all and take a step into the unknown. The entirety of Season 3 is about our three main characters giving parts of themselves up - their identity and morality - in the vain hope of preventing someone else from experiencing that same loss of self. Even though the show has a happy ending, it's honestly astounding how hard everyone was put through the wringer. Between this, ARC-V, and ZEXAL, Yu-Gi-Oh might feature the most trauma I've ever seen fictional 13 year olds go through. Every child in this show needs therapy. don't be fooled. this show is for toddlers. i'm serious! Of all the shows I was keeping up with weekly, at some point this turned into the one I was most excited for. When Season 3 kicked off, GO RUSH!! became the show I prioritized the most. I would drop all my plans to watch this show. It was 5am when I noticed the subs for the final episode released - literally just as I was about to go to bed - and I stayed up to watch it. Every OP and ED being used as the background music... the final summoning chant... everything about the epilogue itself... Even if I had some problems with the show across its lifespan, I couldn't have written a better finale to everything they built up even if I tried. Before watching the final episode I was wishing they had a bit more time to play around with the extended cast, but I'm truly satisfied with how that final episode played out. I'm sad there's no news for a ninth show so it's up in the air what's next for Yu-Gi-Oh. But hopefully after the team has taken a nice long break, there will be more insane children's card game nonsense to come back to. For now I'm gonna make like Yudias and wait patiently for 500 years to see my silly little guys again. |

TOP 5 CHARACTERSHonourable Mention: Zwijo Zwil Velgear![]() ![]() Zwijo is the rival of this show and the first thing we learn about him is that he was Yudias' superior officer and that Yudias watched him die on the battlefield. He of course comes back and serves as the first main antagonist before flipflopping between ally and enemy every time he dies and comes back to life. He has a lot less screentime than most rivals across the franchise on account of constantly dying or just doing his own thing elsewhere but his relationship with Yudias always remains among the most poignant relations in the show. His deck is made up of dark galactic warriors with Greek names and he fuses his soul with them once or twice to pilot them like a mech. However what shoots him up the ranking for me is that he has an amnesia arc where he ends up running a bakery with a woman (who's twice his height btw let's go we love tall women she's my 7th favourite character after Zwijo) who has a crush on him and wanted to live out a bakery AU together. His design for this part is just so cute, it endears me to him soooo much 5. Yudias Velgear![]() Usually the protagonists of Yu-Gi-Oh end up being my favourites, but GO RUSH!! just has so many funny women in it that Yudias has to settle for fifth. Yudias is my naive baby boy who, despite watching his friends die in war, somehow manages to always be the most optimistic person in the room. He is genuinely such a delight and I want nothing but the best for him. His deck introduces the new "Galaxy" type into the TCG, featuring alien-like creatures with his two main aces being the swordsman Transamu Rainac and the dragon(?) Galactica Oblivion. While I admittedly think his deck is a little less interesting than others' in this show (I LOVE Transamu Rainac but Oblivion is kinda eh to me), I am always happy to see him on screen. And of course, as common of Yu-Gi-Oh protagonists, he gets his fair share of being corrupted and irreversibly changed by dark forces. We love to see it. 4. Yuna Goha![]() From what I've seen, Yuna might be one of the most hated characters in the show. She's the heiress of Goha Company, a toy company that went on to sell Rush Duel products. The protagonists are hired to find her after she's suddenly gone missing, just to find she willingly ran away to join a gang of ruffians because she had a big lesbian crush on their leader. She's a character whose motivations are driven by the desire to capture the attention or help out the people she has a crush on , but unlike most characters who are like this, the writers weren't allowed to make her bisexuality explicit and thus she is more known for committing "Women's Wrongs" (something that every girl in this show does btw I've never seen a show with more problematic girls in my life), which I personally love her for. She spends the whole show teetering on the edge of hero and villainess and fandom HATES her for not having a formal redemption arc. She initially uses a "celebrity"-themed deck before adding a spellcaster flare in there after being inspired by her second big crush. She's one of those characters who doesn't get too many duels, but is always playing a part in the background regardless. Why duel when she can simply get things done with her CEO powers? 3. Epoch Kamijo![]() Epoch is introduced in Season 2 as someone who seems like a bit character - she's a child who's the heiress (yeah this show has a lot of those!) of a gear-making company who, despite being loud and bossy, has so much anxiety that she hides herself in a cardboard box at all times. Yudias meets her by chance and is asked to become her Rush Duel mentor by her butler. Her deck is dice- and luck-themed, which she initially rigs by using HERSELF as the dice to always give herself the best outcome. Once she goes through her character development, gaining enough confidence to break free from her cardboard shackles, she vows to "make her own luck" and joins the protagonist's exclusive group across space in Season 3. She doesn't get too many duels across the show, but she's still a really fun character and does the luck gimmick way better than any character in the franchise has done. Her good rolls feel way more earned than Joey Wheeler's ever did. 2. Yuamu Ohdo![]() Easily my favourite of the three protagonists, Yuamu is the cunning big boss of her family's extraterrestrial-hunting business. For the first two seasons she's easily the best duelist of the main three (at once point throwing random cards from a newly opened pack into her deck to throw off an opponent and still winning with them) and is always two steps ahead of anyone across the entire cast. Her deck is technology & dragon themed, her ace being the very cool "Blue-Tooth Burst Dragon". She has the honour of being the first girl in Yu-Gi-Oh history to duel in not one, but TWO season finales! To highlight just how kind the show was to her, in terms of total duels across the series, the only characters she has fewer duels than are the other protagonists and Joey Wheeler (whose claim to fame is that he was in a show with 225 episodes - Yuamu only has 2 fewer duels than him!). Here's to hoping this is a good sign for women in the future of Yu-Gi-Oh. 1. Rovian Kirishima![]() A character so good it inspired me to make an OC based on her... Rovian is initially framed as the second major "villain" that the protagonists face, being the leader of a group of ruffians called the Rovian Bandits who "terrorize" the hidden underground city where the aliens have been quarantined. Though in actuality, she and her gang have been trying to use Rush Dueling to make the locals' lives better. She's the first major wall the protagonists face in the show, managing to defeat Yuhi and Yuamu in a 2v1. Her whole thing is that she constantly speaks in song/poetry (her deck naturally follows a bard theme as well) in ways that may be nonsense or prophetic and I personally loved every moment of it. She unfortunately becomes a support character after Season 1, becoming the designated explosive curry chef, but that doesn't stop me from liking her. My life will be over once they put her in Duel Links. |

4 awesome card art of monsters that are featured in the GO RUSH!! animethis list was a request. the fun part is that i don't actually play the card game (rush duel cards are not available in america lol) and the art in the anime is different from the physical card art. to make matters more difficult, most go rush decks haven't even been printed yet! so here are some monsters i really like that i notice have very cool physical card art. OPs & EDs RANKED8. "Song of Departure"While I still like it, I think this is easily the weakest song across the OPs and EDs. Everything else fits more with GO RUSH!!'s identity in my opinion. 7. "It Won't Be Goodbye" by Ayaka NanaseThe song is pretty and fits the tragedies of Season 3, it's just not as catchy as other songs! 6. "Cosmos" by Taichi MukaiWhen binging shows, it can be easy to be tempted to skip EDs to get through episodes faster. But I can't skip this one. It's just a great song to wind down to after being exposed to the show's weekly insanity. 5. "Let's Duel!" by Masayoshi OishiDon't get me wrong, I do like this song! But it just doesn't hit me as much as the other two openings. It's still super catchy though. :) 4. "Mirage" by FredericI actually started getting sick of this song during Season 1, but now listening to it makes me nostalgic. Is it weird to be nostalgic for a song you first heard two years ago? It's like listening back to a simpler time. 3. "One Way" by Yusuke SaekiI was about to say something about how my love for this song has grown over time, but while looking up a video to embed here I found out this same artist did the first OP for SEVENS. What!! No wonder I like this song!! 2. "STAR RUSH" by Ayaka NanaseAn ending for the girls?!?! Don't mind if I do!! I adore this song, it's so pretty. It gets the award for being the song from this show that gets stuck in my head the most. 1. "Soul Galaxy" by BRADIOThis song is seriously a contender for my favourite Yu-Gi-Oh OP/ED of all time. It's CATCHY. The lyrics are soooo upbeat and positive. It's the second song that plays in the last episode and it was such an HONOUR to have my favourite OP play before the other two. Thank you, Yu-Gi-Oh GO RUSH!!... |
