THE HUNDRED LINE: LAST DEFENSE ACADEMY

Kodaka's Latest Trick

After obsessively playing this game for two weeks before taking a break for a month and a half, I finally came back and finished the last twenty five endings, meaning I have officially seen every drop of content Hundred Line has to offer. If you want to see my general thoughts on the game (which haven't changed since completing it), you can check out my mostly spoiler-free Backloggd review here. The rest of this post you are reading will be rankings about the game. Yay!

There will be spoilers for route names and ending names but due to this game still being a fairly recent release and having SO MUCH CONTENT to see, I shall be hiding blurbs for people who might not want to see them. Even within those I'll try to stay somewhat vague about what happens, but I'll be openly talking about spoilers from First Scenario as well as the first ten or so days of any route on the second playthrough.

ALL ROUTES RANKED

22. Comedy

The Comedy Route is easily the worst route not only in this game, but in perhaps any Uchikoshi game. I think I'd rather play a Danganronpa than play this route again.

Click to read about the Comedy Route

This route offers no worldbuilding, character arcs, or legitimate stakes and instead is approximately 150 total days spread across four flowchart branches of slapstick and fourth wall-breaking shenanigans. On top of this, nearly every day is Free Time, which I guess is okay if you want to grind for materials or Bonding Events, but it certainly doesn't make the route go by any faster. If this route was just one or two branches I wouldn't hate it so much, but you get on this route on Day 16 and has two major splits, with the final split on Day 63, leaving you with a lot of garbage to sit through if you want all eight endings here.

It has some cute CGs, but that's about it. This is genuinely the only route in the game I'd never recommend to someone, especially considering there are other lighthearted or "funny" routes that still manage to feel like part of the narrative. I guess if you're irony-pilled, hate visual novels, or are 5 years old then you might like it? Otherwise, just skip it.

21. Box of Blessings

Click to read about the Box of Blessings Route

Across every route of this game I was intrigued by the landmarks on the exploration maps (such as the mansions, shrines, etc) so Box of Blessings is a route I REALLY want to like since this is the only route you go to most of those places. And the scenes and CGs at these places are fun! The exploration segments get tiring (and I imagine this route is the reason a skip button was patched in for certain story explorations lol) but I love getting a change in scenery when so much of the rest of the game is confined to the school and one particular enemy base.

Unfortunately, the person who wrote this route didn't feel like putting much effort in because the four branches of this route are almost identical until it comes time for one of the eight contrived endings on Day 99. In a game where nearly every route and ending has noticably different dialogue even if the situation is the same, the fact that they didn't share that love with this route is very noticeable. Not to mention, there are two instances where you pick a person to follow the route with, and for the two guys you can pick they get character arcs AND personalized endings, but for the girl options you just get generalized scenes. It's really weird!!!!!!

20. Romance

I have mixed opinions about this route. It's not outright bad like the above two routes, but I don't think it's good either? There are several routes that include romance subplots and every single of them is more engaging and has more depth than any of the romance in this route.

Click to read more about the Romance Route

...Which I think is the point?? That this route is meant to be supper shallow?? I dunno, it doesn't really reveal anything new about the girls you're pursuing in this route (one of them even has a romance subplot in a DIFFERENT route, making their presence in this one feel redundant) except for Kyoshika talking about how she wants to start a family. Which, while predictable, is probably the least interesting thing you could discuss on a route like this with a cast of teenagers.

19. Reset

Click to read about the Reset Route

For some reason, they consider this single ending it's own route instead of combining it with Second Scenario. I honestly thought most of Second Scenario was pretty boring and contrived. I did it as around my 40th ending after doing routes all over the flowchart, where I had a lot of fun seeing all the genre shifts this game had to make every route feel different from First Scenario. I suppose it's a good thing there's a route that's just First Scenario: The Sequel but I found myself eager to push through it so I could move on to somewhere else. For some reason I just don't care about the crazy twists in this game?

Ending 002 spoilers

Anyways, as for the "Reset" part of this route, I just thought the ending sucked. The "everyone gets mindwiped so they can repopulate the world" ending has gotta be a cliche, right? There's just no scenario I can think of where that is a compelling ending.

18. Serial Battles

This route isn't as bad as people claim, even without the patch that made most of the battle skippable.

Click to read more about the Serial Battles Route

You don't actually fight consistently for 50 days once you're on the route. The most battles you ever get in a row is three, otherwise the game breaks it up by skipping a day or giving you an off day. You only have battle days on about half of the 48 days of this route. That said, I still ended up disappointed that this route didn't have any gimmick battles. I was really hoping for different boss combinations or limited units you could play around with. Aside from the final boss being unique, there are one or two battles you fight without Takumi and that's the craziest it gets. If Kodaka succeeds in greenlighting DLC for this game, I really hope they either modify this route to have more unique battles, or make a brand new route with that. Because I think it would go soooo hard.

17. Cult

Click to read about the Cult Route

(Full route name: Cult of Takumi) When the game released, many people stumbled upon the designated horny route first. I heard horror stories about it from one of my friends who was one of those unlucky souls and it honestly gave me a little bit of buyer's regret to know this was in the game! But one night I decided to get it out of the way and was surprised to find it was actually a "horny as horror" route for the majority of its runtime. None of it is written as "okay", it's always unsettling and then both endings are a whammy of unsettling to outright horrifying. It also doesn't go the full 100 days, so it ends up being the perfect length. So as an erotophobe, I found it strangely acceptable.

That said, had this been my first route, there is a very real chance I would have quit this game.

16. Casual

This is like if Comedy Route was good.

Click to read more about the Casual Route

Instead of having lighthearted comedy for the sake of lighthearted comedy, there is actually a canonical reason that everyone and everything is behaving this way while still managing to keep the same unsettling undertone that most of the game has. Instead of there being no stakes whatsoever because everyone is too busy being sillay to experience The Horrors, this route actually gives the already-dead characters some more screentime (something I think is sorely needed & deserved considering how many route splits there are down the Second Scenario pathway which starts off with losing two people by Day 15). I think that's nice.

15. Eva

Click to read about the Eva Route

I want you to know that in every route where Eva remains brainwashed from start to finish I am FURIOUS I am beating Kodaka with hammers. Her own route honestly isn't even that great - it has Kamyuhn which is awesome but she gets forgotten in the milf ending? Anyways, one of these endings is really funny and one is really badass so I guess that's okay. This route and Eva deserved to have so much more.

14. Conspiracy

People don't seem to think highly of this one but I honestly don't think it's that bad? I also really like the shape that the endings make on the flowchart, it's a very unique-looking route. :)

Click to read about the Conspiracy Route

To be honest I spent most of this game holding onto the theory that humanity is already dead, but learning there's another faction has me second-guessing that. I wish the route had a bit more to it.

13. Coming-of-Age

Click to read about the Coming-of-Age Route

This route is pretty funny and the endings are solid, but I can't excuse how the cast completely forgets that Darumi is dead. Literally no one bothers to remember her even when they're honouring their other dead comrades. What Ever.

12. Rebellion

Click to read about the Rebellion Route

While the endings are a little underwhelming from how short they are, I'm glad this route exists. Had I not stumbled upon the S.F. Route locks first and immediately went into a killing fury - and had I not been intentionally avoiding routes my friends were going down - this probably would have been my first route. I wish I could join the rebellion in every route. Any route with Kamyuhn is a good one.

11. S.F.

Click to read about the S.F. Route

There is something off about the characterization in this route that is only addressed once and then dropped. Everyone is so happy and trusting from the get-go, I really don't like it! My favourite part of the game was the character development, so having a route where no one matters aside from Takumi and Hiruko is disappointing. But I love the Looney Tunes-esque shenanigans that occur in the first half of the route, where Takumi and Hiruko try to change other timelines and absolutely nothing goes right because they keep tripping and hitting their head or they get chased by their alternate selves across the school. It was awesome to find out those sinister scenes from other routes were actually just the result of a failboy and failgirl.

While Uchikoshi's fingerprints are all over this route, it still baffles me that everyone is so friendly here... maybe he just wanted to try a different vibe? Who knows.

10. Multiple

Click to read about the Multiple Route

(Full route name: Multiple Eitos) This route is so much fun I honestly wish it could have been a bit longer so it could have been more of a "game" to figure out the real Eito. I genuinely think this is a perfect route in every way, with its only flaw being how short it is.

9. Mystery

Fun fact: this is the only CG in this route that isn't a corpse, a character about to die, or an ending lineup. Yay!

Click to read about the Mystery Route

While S.F. Route feels like Uchikoshi's Zero Time Dilemma, Mystery Route and all its endings feels more like 999. This was one hell of a route to get my first ending on after I was locked out of S.F. route and it got me pumped for the rest of what this game has to offer. It's only weakspot is how many days you skip, but I also think that's a charm point. I love missing everything and not knowing what's going on when I wake up once every 25 days and have to pick who out of my fifteen friends is a killer.

8. Box of Calamity

Click to read about the Box of Calamity Route

Far more interesting than its Blessings counterpart, the Box of Calamity Route is another horror route. This one is about ghosts and hauntings and it's pretty fun! My one complaint is that they put Ima in the cage in this one and depending on the ending he either 1) dies in there or 2) lives to Day 100 but is not only never interacted with again but they don't even let him have any lines in the ending. Free him.

7. Game

Click to read about the Game Route

(Full route name: Killing Game) I was impressed they didn't just try to replicate Danganronpa in this one. Whereas the situation in Danganronpa often puts the characters at their lowest moments, I'd say the Killing Game Route brings out the best in everyone and as a result: the characters that live long enough in this route have some of their strongest moments in the game here. For one, this is the route that made me like Yugamu, who doesn't get a lot of good-natured screentime on other routes. I also think this is one of Takemaru's strongest showings even though you don't see him as much as the other characters. The good ending to this route is my personal true ending of the game.

6. Goodbye

Click to read about the Goodbye Route

(Full route name: Goodbye Eito) This is an interesting one that I wish had gone on longer. This is one of the rare times in the game where you are removed from Takumi's perspective and instead you follow Eito as he's exiled from Last Defense Academy. While I think he's a little too soft compared to the Eito we know (perhaps a little forced due to the short runtime of this route), I liked the opportunity to not only look into his brain, but to see what he's like when away from the others.

5. Second Scenario

Click to read about the Second Scenario Route

As mentioned in the Reset Route blurb, I thought a lot of Second Scenario to be pretty dull. The "correct" choice is always so painfully telegraphed and unnaturally drilled into your head that I'm baffled how people accidentally end up on the Cult Route or the Conspiracy Route instead. Not to mention, choices like choosing who to sacrifice to kill V'ehxness or having to choose between Kurara or Gaku feel like forced drama when on other routes similar problems are tackled without a single person dying. Unlike most routes, I don't think there's enough of a difference between the timelines for the sacrifices to feel natural or warranted. But the reason this is so high up is for everything after the decision that puts you on this ending or Reset Route's ending. The final fight and the following cutscenes are perhaps the most memorable moment in the game for me and that alone made the journey here feel worth it.

This game has two endings that are considered the "true" endings - Ending 001 from this route and Ending 055 from the S.F. Route. The idea between these two endings is that in one you sacrifice the truth to save your friends, while in the other you sacrifice everything to learn te truth. While I don't think the S.F. Route does its part to its full effectiveness - giving up the truth is never a "choice" you make, it's just that the route has other fish to fry - Ending 001 accomplishes the other side of the coin in all the ways that matter.

Now if only the final fight was harder or more railroaded, because if I was Takumi I would have gotten Ending 001 with only one casualty lol.

4. Slasher

Click to read about the Slasher Route

From what I've seen, this route isn't too popular and I assume that's because most players aren't into old cheesy horror movies. I'm not too into them either, but I have watched Return of the Living Dead and a couple Nightmare on Elm Streets and Friday the 13ths so I immediately picked up what they were putting down when I sentered this route. The two braches on Slasher Route are so different that I'm surprised it's considered the same route - on one the cast is being hunted by a masked serial killer with a power saw, and on the other the dead members of the squad are being reanimated as nearly-indestructible zombies. I think both paths and all their endings are extremely fun, although I think I liked the zombie half a bit more? The dread and the atmosphere are awesome, and I loved seeing all the unique character sprites and 3D models for the zombified students. Yay!

3. V'ehxness

Click to read about the V'ehxness Route

This route is really cool. One complaint I had about this game is that you don't really get to see any of the enemy commanders outside of battle... except for in this route! I just think it's a lot of fun to see another side to all these guys, especially V'ehxness herself. The only downside is that even though they mention Eva is at the school too, you never get to see her?? Why would they do that

2. First Scenario

Despite how cool the rest of the game is, the game's first route is an irreplaceable experience for me. While there are a few characters who don't see any character development on this route (the Second-to-Last students being the biggest example), the characters who do get it feel so much more natural than how they speedrun (or omit) it in some later routes. While there are some routes that redo the character arcs with a fun twist (the Kako & Ima arc in Second Scenario is pretty fun), I often found myself missing watching these characters grow. Gaku in particular is a nasty example of a character who feels like a different, worse character compared to who he was in the first route. The deaths also hit harder in this route than they do in most other routes, and honestly?

Spoilers for post-First Scenario

As much as I respect and appreciate the decision to make the second campaign completely different, I wish there was the ability to return to the original timeline to make choices. There are so many instances where there could be a story split! Choosing not to fight on the first day, sparing more commanders, choosing which characters you convince to join the fight first... For some reason, some of the persuasion minigames have "back routes" where you hit a dead end because you don't have enough information to effectively go through with any of the options. I totally thought that was going to be a mechanic later.

I love this first route for its character writing and its intrigue. Even if none of these bits turned out to be branching paths, the time I spent thinking about it was still really fun. Also, most of the commanders don't hit the same way as they did on this first route. In most cases it serves as a stepping stone for one of your friend's character development, and that's Awesome. In later routes after getting over the shock of the battle differences, there's not much else to them. There's really nothing like seeing the high school VN scene for the first time.

I also really like Sirei being dead. Letting him die again should have been the first choice of the second playthrough.

1. Retsnom

After running into both locked routes on my initial attempts, Retsnom was the first route I completed and no route managed to dethrone the love I had for it.

Click to read more about the Retsnom Route

Darumi became a top 3 character for me after this one, and thank GOD they gave her this route because she's absent from half of the routes in the game. Peeling away the layers of Darumi's persona to meet her true self... the body horror of it all... The fact that Darumi namedrops Saya no Uta throughout the game das one of her favourite VNs and then gets to live out a softer version of it that gives her the kindness she deserves is really cool. I also really liked Eito having a character to bond with other than Takumi. I do wish there was a little bit of a route for trying to keep Retsnom as a pet instead of giving you an instant game over but this route is still perfect for what it is.

TOP 10 ENDINGS

In a game with one hundred endings, it stands to reason that some of them might not be good. But on the other hand, some of them are REALLY good. So here is my top ten endings from The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy! The only restriction I placed on myself was that I could only pick one ending per route, otherwise this would just be even more of a retread of my favourite routes than it already is.

I will be talking about not just the listed routes/endings themselves but also other endings from that route so I've hidden them in case there are ones on this list you haven't played yet and don't want to be spoiled on. Just click on the routes below to reveal the text!

10. 006 - Rebellion Route: Seeds of Hope

As I mentioned above, I'm pretty sure Rebellion would have been the natural first route I completed had there not been outside circumstances. While both endings are very sudden and short, they are both promising futures and are somehow among the only ones to feature humanity and the people of Futurum coexisting peacefully. While I think both endings are good (Takumi not being in the Nozomi one at all is REALLY funny - she did not forgive him after that) 006 edges out on top because I am a Kamyuhn defender. If the girl I love begs me to let her die to protect a child who is going to pave the way for the world's future, then I'd be a real idiot to say no.

9. 003 - Goodbye Eito Route: Praying For Your Happiness

Putting this ending on the list almost doesn't feel appropriate since this is such a short route with only one ending.

8. 047 - Coming-of-Age Route: Bittersweet Youth

I go back and forth about how much I like this route, but this ending itself is just the right balance of all emotions at once to be satisfying. That said, if there was not a CG of Eito cutting his own head off, this probably wouldn't be on the top 10 list. There's something about that moment that makes this ending feel a lot more raw than it's supposed to be.

7. 009 - Multiple Eitos: Endurance Match

This route is full of fun endings, and what is more fun than watching your protagonist kill themselves over and over in an attempt to remove the evil ghost in their brain? This ending is a perfect blend of uncomfortable and entertaining, and the fact that Takumi loses the battle at the end of it all is honestly so intriguing. One day people will write fanfic continuations of this ending where Eito goes on an angsty rollercoaster on his journey to Day 100 in Takumi's body.

6. 007 - Eva Route: Thank You

Although she dies here, this is my favourite ending for Eva. She defeats her sister with her own might and gets to die as herself on her own terms. This is one of those endings with a bunch of unknown dead people, but Kamyuhn is still alive and I doubt Takumi would just leave her, so I think there could still be room for a bittersweet happy ending here.

5. 049 - Retsnom Route: We Are One

I believe outside of S.F. Route and Ending 100 this is the ONLY ending in the game that features all sixteen playable characters alive. Well, are they really alive if they're part of Retsnom now? It's a happy ending with underlying dread since you have the knowledge that these kids' happiness won't last, since you learn that Retsnom hosts eventually go mad and kill themselves. But there is still something satisfying seeing that sixteen-person Class Armour transformation for the first time, watching V'ehxness be easily overwhelmed, and knowing that everyone was able to board the escape pod in this timeline. Even though it might not be them anymore, they all agreed to become Retsnom so there's no underlying hostility that you usually find in possession stories. It's a weirdly happy ending.

4. 074 - Slasher Route: Flight Of The Living Dead

I actually had five different endings from this route in my notes to put on my top ten, so picking just one was hard. But 074 stands out above the rest for the morbid comedy of it all, seeing the whole team become zombie-fied and strap themselves into the escape pod so they can continue to multiply on the satellite. It's like an ending to a cheesy horror movie and I love it.

3. 001 - Last Defense Academy 2nd Scenario: Farewell, Last Defense Academy

This ending is the only reason I like Second Scenario. It saved the entire experience for me. Featuring a unique final battle and fully animated cutscenes, the team at TooKyo put their soul into making this sequence perfect. My only complaint is that they should have made the final battle harder or added more restrictions to your actions so you were more likely to lose units like it wants you to. Clearing out the field with only one death and realizing you're supposed to lose everyone to progress puts a damper on the vibe as you have to wait an extra 10 turns to let your party die... but it's still such a good sequence that I don't think it affected my enjoyment in the long run. The parallels to the end of First Scenario as well... it is "peak cinema", as the kids say. They really made an ending so good that it's hard to bunker down and see the rest of the game. Because where do you even go after that?

2. 087 - Killing Game Route: Hope From Despair

This is my personal "true ending" of the game. Although there are many casualties, all the survivors are filled with hope and ambitions for the future that you don't see on other routes. Both Shion and Kamyuhn even get to join the escape pod home, and overall I think this is the only "good ending" that makes the team feel like a family. It's definitely intentional too since the survivors consist of the Takumi-Tsubasa-Darumi-Yugamu roommates polycule, the Nozomi-Kamyuhn-Shion found family, and the Tsukumo twins. I'm such a sucker for happy family endings.

I probably also like this route since it's the closest thing to a new arc that the Tsukumo twins get, with their goal of making meals for the poor back on the TRC only ever coming up on this route. All-in-all, perfect writing for every single character on this route. No survivor feels drastically underdeveloped compared to everyone else, which is something that's usually unavoidable in a cast as big as this. This route with this ending could have been its own standalone game and I think it still would have popped off.

1. 044 - V'ehxness Route - Here With You

The potential bond between Takumi and V'ehxness is something I really hoped the game would explore and I was not disappointed. Despite their limited time together, the two of them form something that's not quite romance and not quite friendship, but whatever it is is enough for them to care about each other. I am such a sucker for these "Enemies-to-Something" type relationships, where not even the two involved know what to call themselves and don't even realize something is there until it's almost too late.

If V'ehxness had the strength to drag Takumi's dying body out into the woods behind the school, I'm sure she could have had the strength to retaliate and kill at least a few more LDA soldiers. She could have absorbed Takumi's cryptoglobin to heal herself. But she didn't. A V'ehxness in a different timeline would have, but this one chose not to and died quietly with Takumi. It ends on a really beautiful CG and I sincerely hope whoever came up with that composition is thriving right now.

TRIVIA: WHO HAD THE MOST DEATHS?

(UNMARKED SPOILERS FOR ALL ROUTES)

During the game, I decided to tally up which characters suffered the most permadeaths across the routes to see how unbalanced everyone's screentime was. While I'd say this game does a pretty good job at giving you enough time with every character to learn about them and experience their arcs, there are definitely some who don't get to play ball as much as everyone else. So in this section, I'm tallying up two death counters:

  1. Total deaths across routes before an ending
  2. Total deaths across endings

To be eligible for the first one, they have to die before the final day of the route. Additionally, since some routes feature different deaths on different flowchart branches, a character that only dies in some branches but not all of them will only count for .5 of a point. And finally, if for some reason a character comes back after death (whether it be via revival, hallucinations, or some other means) then they only count for .5 of that route as long as they stay alive until the ending.

Additionally: Reset, Goodbye, and Multiple don't count for the first death total. Reset doesn't count because it's just the same total as Second Scenario but with different ending casualties, while the other two routes don't count because we don't get to see most of the alive characters anyways so they may as well not be alive at all. This counter is to compare screentime rather than raw body count data!

For the ending death total, I rely on this simple question: are they shown or cited to be alive/dead when the credits roll? In addition, here are some little rules in regards to certain game scenarios:

  1. Being possessed by G'ie counts as being dead
  2. Becoming Retsnom doesn't count as a death since it's intentionally vague whether or not they're still alive after being taken over
  3. An explosion or "the missles go off" ending assumes everyone died if they didn't successfully board the escape pod

I don't add to the counter if there are unknown variables, such as in endings that end abruptly (like any Conspiracy Route ending), don't mention which characters are dead (for example: the Multiple Eitos ending where Takumi kills a few Eitos before getting killed by three still-living Eitos), or when an ending includes Takumi saying "I don't know what happened to the others or if they're still alive or not). And perhaps most importantly: I only count that timeline's iteration of that character. So when you kill Eito at the start of the game and the Eito from Box of Calamity enters Killing Game timeline, that timeline's Eito is still dead and thus adds to the death counter even if Calamity!Eito is alive during an ending. Likewise, just because he's gone from the timeline doesn't mean he's counted as "dead" in any Box of Calamity ending.

Protagonist Protection: Takumi Sumino

Surprising no one, Takumi has the least route deaths out of everyone due to the fact that most routes end when he dies. That said, there is one branch of the Slasher Route where he dies before an ending and the player's perspective shifts to another character for the last few days. In terms of ending deaths, he only ties for second and I was surprised at how few solo death endings there actually are. Aside from a few outliers like Killing Game where you refuse Yugamu's help or Retsnom where you try to calm down the beast, most of his ending deaths are tied to a total wipeout of the team.

Of course, this would be a different story if any of the many electrocution endings in Conspiracy resulted in death... but I'm just going to assume Takumi was fine after those endings and he got to play Casual Route 2 or something.

  • Total Route Deaths: 0.5
  • Total Ending Deaths: 38

The Doomed (or not?) Love Interest: Nozomi Kirifuji

After her death is the reason Takumi travels back in time, you'd think there would be a lot more routes where Nozomi dies to pressure him into continuously going back again and again. Instead she's tied for second place for least amount of route deaths! Her three ill-fated routes are the aforementioned First Scenario, a branch of the Slasher Route, and all of Box of Calamity when she's killed early on and impersonated for the whole route.

  • Total Route Deaths: 2.5
  • Total Ending Deaths: 40

Hell Was Full So She Came BACK: Hiruko Shizuhara

Since Hiruko died so early on in First Scenario, it seems all the writers were onboard with letting her live to the end in nearly every other route. Her only other major death is during the Killing Game Route and she also gains a .5 from a branch of the Slasher Route. Her survivability makes sense once you discover she's the secret second protagonist, since her whole character arc is about how many times she's had to live these one hundred days. As an aside, I get the impression our First Scenario Hiruko was already in the thick of her story, but I'd love to see someone do a deeper analysis and figure out what order she experienced the timelines in.

  • Total Route Deaths: 2.5
  • Total Ending Deaths: 38

Too Scared To Die: Tsubasa Kawana

Tied with Hiruko and Nozomi for route deaths and coming in first place for least number of ending deaths, Tsubasa only dies on all branches of both Mystery and Slasher Routes and also dies during a branch of Box of Calamity. It's not surprising she has so few deaths compared to the rest of the cast, since all the writers seem to like her a lot considering how many romance subplots she has. But I guess to be fair, a lot of routes would have gone differently if she wasn't around to do mechanic stuff.

  • Total Route Deaths: 2.5
  • Total Ending Deaths: 33

Possessed By The Narrative: Kako Tsukumo

Narrowly achieving a better life counter than her brother, Kako exclusively experiences total route deaths. Not only that, but all her route deaths are at the hands of the G'ie whether it be directly (taken over by one in Box of Calamity, and killed by a host of one in Slasher) or indirectly (her killer in Mystery was ordered by a G'ie host to kill her). I guess she's fated to cross paths with a weird bug one way or another.

Gone And Forgotten: Ima Tsukumo

Although he comes back in Sirei's body in First Scenario (which they totally should have done with more characters on other routes IMO), Ima dies for good before the end of the route and also dies alongside his sister on all branches of Slasher Route. His other two routes are a little more complicated though! On the S.F. Route he dies just before the final boss on one of the branches, while on Box of Calamity he is murdered on one branch, and the other I'm counting as a death by the technicality that you do not see him for the last 50 days of the branch he survives. He doesn't even appear in the endings! The characters just say they knocked him out and put him on the escape pod already. How do I know you're not lying to me?! What if you killed him and are trying to Weekend at Bernie's his corpse!! Where is my son!!!!!

You'd think when he and his sister have as few route deaths as they do, they'd have to have a focus route somewhere. But every time a route teases some higher relevance to the two of them (such as Mystery, Calamity, Blessings, Comedy, Casual... and probably more) their arc comes to a premature close as some other problem takes center stage. I assume most writers simply didn't know what to do with them beyond their First Scenario character arc since if you keep them both alive that's two extra characters to write, and if you kill just one of them you lose Ima's defining character trait OR you'd be repeating Kako's First Scenario arc... All I'm saying is that I would have given them both the best arcs of all time. :)

The Assassin Without A Kill Count: Yugamu Omokage

Yugamu holds onto his life surprisingly well for a Second-to-Last Academy soldier not named Nozomi. Perhaps even more surprising is that despite carrying the aura of a Chapter 3 Danganronpa killer, there are no routes where he breaks down and intentionally murders someone. It could have been SO easy to make him into an actual murder pervert, but even during his more heated moments he sticks to yapping about dissections. Heck, in Cult of Takumi, he dissects himself instead of dissecting Takumi despite always expressing the desire to do it to someone else. How much of his desire is even real? It's like Kodaka realized Korekiyo's schhtick would have been REALLY interesting to explore at the end of Danganronpa V3 and made Yugamu live forever to compensate for that.

...Anyways. His death is one of the ones that kicks off Retsnom and he also dies during Calamity and Slasher. Finally, he can die on one branch of S.F. Thank you Kodaka and friends for making Yugamu an actual character instead of another one of your one-dinmensional murder freaks.

The Guardian: Takemaru Yakushiji

Takemaru is resilient as hell and as a result, the only routes he dies on are ones that have gone horribly wrong - and often while trying to protect someone. He dies on all branches of Slasher, dies mid-way through Killing Game, and was apparently the only person keeping everyone normal since his death causes Cult Route to occur. He also dies on certain branches of Calamity and S.F. - but not all of them.

Forced To Live For Your Amusement: Gaku Maruko

Following in his spiritual ancestor Kazuichi Souda, Gaku has a pretty strong life expectancy all things considered. His route deaths are almost exclusively at the start of a route - such as being the first death on the Mystery-Game timeline as well as the death to kick off Conspiracy - or a couple days before the ending like during Slasher or some branches of Calamity. Going nearly 50% on his ending death counter is honestly largely thanks to having the misfortune to die at the start of all the routes with 8+ endings.

The reasoning for choosing him to stay alive on Second Scenario is soooo BS btw. They must have assumed most players would want to save Kurara instead, which is why they bash a warning against your head beforehand lol. I would have simply saved them both, it would be so easy.

  • Total Route Deaths: 4.5
  • Total Ending Deaths: 48

What Is Your Problem?: Shouma Ginzaki

It's so funny that the guy with literal pacifist disease kills more people than the assassin in the cast. Shouma is killed on Mystery, Killing Game, Eva, and Coming-of-Age routes. He also dies on some branches of Calamity and Slasher. He's something of a go-to when the narrative wants to kill someone for shock value but have already exhausted their usual targets.

  • Total Route Deaths: 5
  • Total Ending Deaths: 42

Girls Rock: Moko Mojiro

Moko has a surprising number of deaths for someone we technically didn't get to meet in First Scenario. She also has even fewer character arcs than the Tsukumo twins, but at least she got a starring role throughout Romance Route. Alongside First Scenario, Moko also dies in Calamity, Slasher, Retsnom, Killing Game, and Mystery, making her another character who exclusively dies before any significant route splits happen. Despite that, she manages to sneak by with a lower ending death count than several above characters thanks to most of these routes having fewer endings than most.

  • Total Route Deaths: 6
  • Total Ending Deaths: 38

The Queen Of Pointless Deaths: Kurara Oosuzuki

Now we start getting into the game's most unfortunate souls - those who had the gall to die on the Second Scenario path. After you sacrifice her to bypass the Conspiracy split, Kurara is absent for a total of six routes: Second Scenario, Rebellion, Eva, Serial Battles, Goodbye Eito, and Multiple Eitos. As mentioned above, I'm not counting Goodbye/Multiple since even the living characters aren't in those ones, but... that's still a lot! She gets to come back as a hallucination in Casual Route but otherwise you don't get to see her much down the Second Scenario conglomerate.

Unlike the others who die in Second Scenario, Kurara doesn't find much happiness on other routes either. She dies early on in Retsnom and Killing Game; meanwhile in Mystery she gets killed and impersonated by a G'ie host before any route splits occur. In Slasher Route, she only survives long enough to see a single ending. She doesn't even get to live on all the earlier off-shoot routes of Second Scenario, dying on certain branches of Box of Calamity Route. I don't know why so many writers had it out for her, but she's easily one of the mistreated members of the cast. Let her ball!!

  • Total Route Deaths: 8.5
  • Total Ending Deaths: 51

Toxic Yaoi Forever: Eito Aotsuki

Despite having plenty of opportunities to make the choice to kill him, Eito is the weirdest character to count deaths for. Not only does he leave the school and vanish for certain routes - making his fate unknown for several endings - but he often finds a way to defy death and show up in routes post-mortem. Thankfully, this only matters for Multiple Eitos (where his spirit lives on within Takumi) and Retsnom (where he is brought back to life. Sort Of.) because every other time he tries to come back in a timeline he's already died in, he just dies again.

With that said, Eito is dead from the start of Killing Game, Mystery, Slasher, and Comedy and also dies during First Scenario and Serial Battles. As mentioned, he gets revived in Retsnom and in Multiple Eitos (sort of). Finally, he does not appear in Conspiracy at all and his Calamity self that leaps to Killing Game Route is killed, totaling his nine route deaths. For his Calamity iteration, I doubled up on counting his Killing Game ending deaths if Sponsor!Eito was dead, of which there are only two endings after that happens anyways.

  • Total Ending Deaths: 53

Cannot Be Killed By Conventional Means: Kyoshika Magadori

Kyoshika misses out on Second Scenario, Blessings, Calamity, Conspiracy, Rebellion, Eva, and Serial Battles thanks to her forced death early on in the Second Scenario pathway. She also dies on Killing Game, Retsnom, and one branch of S.F. Finally, she comes back as a hallucination on Casual Route, bringing her total route death count to 10 under my rules.

I don't think any character in this game should have been dead for more than 50% of the routes and endings (except Sirei - he should die on every route), but unfortunately because they crammed SO MANY routes down one pathway, it ends up being like that for most of our top death magnets. Girls, you deserved better.

Fun fact: Kyoshika is the only character in the game to survive all branches of the Slasher Route! (Well, at least until the endings...) Also aside from S.F., her route deaths are all due to sacrificing herself rather than being overpowered and killed. So that's neat.

  • Total Route Deaths: 10
  • Total Ending Deaths: 61

The Defense Academy's Punching Bag: Eva

Eva is THE most mistreated playable character on the cast. She's killed during First Scenario, Second Scenario, Box of Blessings, Rebellion, Killing Game, Mystery, Slasher, as well as the only confirmed character to be killed during Multiple Eitos aside from Eito himself. Although dead in Calamity, she "comes back" as a "ghost" during some branches... but ultimately remains dead (or her true form as a fake is revealed, disqualifying her from the tally anyways) across all endings, so she doesn't get half a point back for that. Finally, she is not even mentioned during Romance Route, implying she was killed off-screen instead of taken prisoner like she is on nearly every other route. She also doesn't appear on the V'ehxness Route, but at least she is mentioned to be present in the school on that one so I'm just going to turn the other way instead of adding it to the counter.

If her high death rate wasn't cruel enough, she only evades brainwashing on routes where Sirei is dead and stays dead, which only amounts to First Scenario, Killing Game, Mystery, and Slasher. That's right - all are routes she dies on! (And V'ehxness Route, but again, we don't get to see her sooo...) She manages to break the brainwashing in her route and in one S.F. ending, where she dies in one of those endings and loses her daughter in the other two endings. There is literally no happy ending for her.

  • Total Route Deaths: 10
  • Total Ending Deaths: 65

The Self-Fulfilling Prophecy: Darumi Amemiya

Finally we reach the playable character with the most deaths across the game. Darumi dies in less than ten days of the Second Scenario pathway, meaning she misses out on V'ehxness Route, Cult of Takumi, Box of Blessings, Box of Calamity, Conspiracy, Coming-of-Age, Rebellion, Eva Route, and Serial Battles. Like the other dead characters, she comes back as a hallucination in Casual, but she also dies during Slasher and one branch of S.F. Route, bringing her total up to twelve route deaths.

Look, I get it! The whole joke behind her character is that she has the aura of someone who dies early in a Danganronpa game... but they didn't have to actually go through with it! She's consistently the least-mourned character in the cast, being completely forgotten about in Coming-of-Age Route and generally forgotten about if there are any other dead characters to talk about. The reason of course is because she doesn't make connections outside of Killing Game and Retsnom route... which are two of the best routes in the game, so clearly there's a pattern to success here.

  • Total Route Deaths: 12
  • Total Ending Deaths: 71

Okay He Looks Very Polite: Nigou

And now all that's left is the two mascot characters. Their numbers might be off because I only decided to count them after I finished the game, so I had to go back and assume whether or not they were alive based on if they showed up to the last couple battle briefings on any given route (since they are often just not in endings even if they're alive). I was surprised to find Nigou had a better track record than Sirei since I certainly don't remember seeing them more often, but Conspiracy Route is what made that tiny difference in the end.

Nigou dies during First Scenario, Second Scenario, Rebellion, Calamity, V'ehxness, Coming-of-Age, Retsnom, Slasher, Comedy, Killing Game, and Mystery, and then also dies on some branches of Blessings and S.F. I suppose you could also count Gotoh taking over in Conspiarcy as a "death" in the same way G'ie possession counts as one, but Gotoh claims Nigou's AI will return after a few days and while we don't see that happen, I'm just going to assume it's true.

  • Total Route Deaths: 12
  • Total Ending Deaths: 64

Your Commanding Officer (Gone Wrong): Sirei

All of my favourite routes are the ones where Sirei is dead so I'm pleased to discover he has the highest route death count in the game. Sirei dies during First Scenario, Rebellion, Conspiracy, Blessings, Calamity, Cult of Takumi, V'ehxness, Coming-of-Age, Retsnom, Slasher, Killing Game, and Mystery. He dies on some branches of S.F. and is also revived during Comedy, where he unfortunately lives all the way to the end.

As I mentioned in the Ima section, I think it's a total missed opportunity to not put a dead character's consciousness in a dead Sirei/Nigou across any of the 21 routes after First Scenario. It was genuinely one of the most fun parts of First Scenario and considering how many routes the mascots die on, I'm sure Takumi could have piped up here and there to be like "hey we did this thing last time and it worked out pretty well; let's do it again to save our friend".

i hate to say it but i'm kind of endeared by this game. there have been a couple rough lines but i like these characters so far and the normal:freak ratio doesnt seem as bad as danganronpa? (i still havent seen the second batch of characters tho)

i dont know if their collab games get as steep sales as solo uchikoshi games (i know danganronpa games are not regularly going for $2 lol) but i might honestly consider picking this up once the price drops. maybe for less than $30
kiir⭐ @yoshichao.bsky.social · April 24, 2025
using machine translation looking at the japanese script and maybe its because megumi ogata does such a killer job or maybe i'm missing some words but ima in japanese comes off as more of an embarrassing doting older brother who views kako as an infant instead of [gestures to english script]
kiir⭐ @yoshichao.bsky.social · April 24, 2025
i HATE to say this but ima is actually pretty endearing in japanese LOL. i think if i play this game i'm going to have to compare the scripts for this character line by line - the localization makes him more dramatic/flowery whenever he talks about his sister but seems more to-the-point in jpn
kiir⭐ @yoshichao.bsky.social · April 24, 2025
still have the tab open so i'm letting the japanese playthrough run with yt auto-translation going and the english version localized out a food that was invented by the english & used by american military and replaced it with just "dry bread". bizarre thing to dumb down for western audiences lol

kiir⭐ @yoshichao.bsky.social · May 4, 2025
decided to get the romance route out of the way after seeing someone else play most of it and coming off of killing game route, which already had a very developed romance with tsubasa, makes this route feel so undercooked...

i think if they shuffled the interactions with the girls across the 75 days instead of breaking them into 25 day chunks one at a time it would have felt better? idk the whole route is meant to be trope-y slop but they could have gone way harder on it

i also appreciate the joke being how no one else gets any lines or screentime because you are locked in a cycle of interacting with these four girls and not even the plot matters. that said, i really appreciate other routes giving all characters stuff to do. there isn't a "useless" character in this game unlike other kodaka (and even some uchikoshi) games

if i was one of the villains in hundred line and i rolled up to the school on day 87 and saw anything these kids were dealing with on the various super death routes i think i would feel bad and want to help. the whole top part of the flowchart is so dire for them theres not a single nice route there
kiir⭐ @yoshichao.bsky.social · May 6, 2025

kiir⭐ @yoshichao.bsky.social · May 6, 2025
as someone who feels that danganronpa's biggest weakness is the death game setting, ironically my favourite routes in hundred line are the ones steeped in permadeath scenarios lol. but the route system removes what makes it hurt danganronpa (early deaths mean you dont learn about that character) so i guess what i'm saying is that danganronpa should have a flowchart
COMING-OF-AGE ROUTE & SECOND SCENARIO
kiir⭐ @yoshichao.bsky.social · May 8, 2025
i think the big reason i like the top routes on the flowchart more is because they feel different? like i LOVED the first route, but because i loved it and spent so much time in it i don't want to play it again. the web in the middle of the flowchart feels way too similar + has kodaka Slop
kiir⭐ @yoshichao.bsky.social · May 8, 2025
while i think having route splits mid-battle is really cool, forcing you to replay the whole battle sucks & is made worse by the fact that every instance of this is on the same flowchart path. it makes it feel more tedious than it should!
kiir⭐ @yoshichao.bsky.social · May 8, 2025
another frustrating thing about the middle routes is that you solve the same problems on other routes without losing anyone, unlike here. seeing other routes first kind of makes it feel like manufactured drama, especially when the game is otherwise consistent with cross-route solutions
kiir⭐ @yoshichao.bsky.social · May 8, 2025
anyone who sticks with the middle of the flowchart path until you've gotten all the endings in it is insane. this takes so long! i haven't even gotten one ending and i want to bounce! but i only have one non-locked branch left aside from this so then i'll be forced to do all this back-to-back...
kiir⭐ @yoshichao.bsky.social · May 9, 2025

you can tell they had to rush this game by the end because whenever you have a route where a non-standard character gets locked in one of the cages, they stop giving you free time events so they don't have to program them being in the cage. i haven't seen ima on this route in 50 days. its day 99
kiir⭐ @yoshichao.bsky.social · May 12, 2025
i think they put like 75% of the time and resources doing the first route and the intended "second route" because they are the only routes that have all the game's mechanics in them. they are the only routes that let you walk in the halls in the mornings.

while i do think its insanely funny that some routes just dont have free time, i've played a few that really FEEL like they were meant to (you'll have days where takumi wakes up, has 3 lines of dialogue in his room and then it skips to the next day) but they ran out of time to program it in
kiir⭐ @yoshichao.bsky.social · May 12, 2025

GENERAL THOUGHTS + CASUAL ROUTE
kiir⭐ @yoshichao.bsky.social · May 13, 2025
weirdly pining for this game to be harder. i wish they didnt drop the difficulty of fights when you have fewer party members. i was really hoping some routes would have fights hard enough to encourage you to go to other routes first but it's always pretty easy to 1-2 turn every wave in any battle

i remember going "theres no way they let you keep using eito regularly after the first route hes so strong" and i'm glad i was right but in exchange you get hiruko again for most routes and she can also solo everything lol... and there are like 3 other characters that are cracked too

personally my favourite fights are the ones where you only have 5 or less characters to play with so you end up using way more of their and the game's mechanics. i think i would have been happy if they found more excuses to lower your fighter count OR have gimmick fights restrict options. personally my favourite fights are the ones where you only have 5 or less characters to play with so you end up using way more of their and the game's mechanics. i think i would have been happy if they found more excuses to lower your fighter count OR have gimmick fights restrict options

...i'm just. trying to imagine vlr's endgame being like this. like imagine sigma going "ok i'm here now with the bomb code lets type it in!" and he trips and falls and passes out for 24 hours. just insanely funny antics to put behind a flowchart lock. imagine after vlr's first puzzle room phi does her moon jump and drop kicks sigma to make him forget hes a pervert; instead it gives him brain damage so bad that he's passed out for most of the game except he manages to wake up to do the a/b games before passing out again. and hes still a pervert, so literally nothing helpful was accomplished.

never in my life would i have guessed uchikoshi wrote the sf route because it does not resemble his vibes at all, but i probably should have guessed it was him when one of the split routes was the result of a coin flip and there was also an explosion bad ending lol. he loves ztd
